Online Writing in Plain English
Firstly, what is online writing?
A non exhaustive list:
- Blogging
- Newsletters
- Social media posts
These are the forms of writing you can use to showcase your own interests through your brand personality.
You might ask “why bother?”
Here’s an answer: according to this study, blogging and other forms of writing may improve your mental health. What’s more is it will boost your business, help you cultivate personal interests giving you a place to share them with the large expanse of the internet (your potential customers), and potentially make new friends.
Some additional benefits of writing online include:
- Increased creativity
- Increased audience engagement
- It builds discipline to help you achieve your goals.
A win-win situation. You get to practice refining your communication skills through writing, practice creating engaging content, and attract like minded customers as a consequence.
Write to Yourself
Have you ever had an itch to share an idea with a friend for it to fall upon deaf ears? Maybe you’re targeting the wrong audience. But fear no more, because armed with this new knowledge, you now have the tools to create something unique, to tap into your deep creative being. Excited?
It’s another powerful form of leverage to grow not just on a business level, but as an individual too. Why? – You get to talk and share about your own journey, hobbies, interests etc. what’s not to love!
I’m reading a book, aptly named “on writing well” in which I found a quote:
“If you write for yourself, you’ll reach the people you want to write for.” – Use this as inspiration. FInd your own voice, share your thoughts and don’t be afraid to get personal.
now let’s get into the marketing side of things with keywords, to implement your ideas.
Keyword Research and SEO for Your Brand Personality
Keyword research is the act of finding similar keywords to your chosen topic, which considers the following:
- Volume – meaning that a good number of people are searching for that term – in other words, a high number of people are looking for similar content to what you write about.
- Competition – how competitive that search term is.
“Why do I need to perform keyword research?” – Search engines like google, like to organise webpages based on their relevance to users. Every time you search for something, google crawls the web, and finds keywords that are relevant to what you searched for. The site with the most relevant keywords and SEO (search engine optimisation) will rank higher on the SERP (Search engine results page).
I won’t go into technical detail here, but check out my article on keyword research for more in depth information.
This is only relevant to your website content like blog posts and articles. If you’re posting on social media and already have an audience, you’re ahead of the game!
All you need to know is that learning SEO, or getting a specialist is a good idea to begin writing on your website.
In summary
“How do I perform keyword research?” – there are many tools out there, I recommend SEMRush or AHrefs – 2 excellent industry standard choices. However these are paid options, but there is a free trial available for both.
This may seem like an obstacle however, with the right specialist you’re never far from success. Thats where I can help.
